Since 1975, Ken Templeton has been involved in real estate as an owner, developer, or broker. From 1979 through 1985, Ken’s main activities revolved primarily in general real estate brokerage and residential construction. In 1982, he officially formed the company: Ken Templeton Realty & Investment, Inc. However in 1985, Ken decided to set set his sights on bigger opportunities and became focused on real estate development, which formed: Templeton Development Corporation.
In 1986, Ken opened Rainbow Drug, which was the largest independent retail drug store in Nevada, at that time. Inside that store, Ken also ran a slot route, which generated healthy revenues for the company. In 1997 when Rainbow Drug was sold to Longs Drug, Longs Drug offered Ken exclusive rights to manage and operate the slot routes for all of its stores in Nevada. This fortuitous opportunity helped to form Templeton Gaming Corporation, which also became the exclusive slot route operator for Food4Less and Vista Grill in Sun City, Summerlin. In August 2007, Ken opened his first casino, Mystic Lodge Casino* in Henderson, NV, a popular neighborhood casino with a family style atmosphere.
However, Ken’s flagship product is Carefree Senior Living (“Carefree”), a premier senior apartment community that promotes a unique lifestyle to independent and active seniors. In the late 1980’s Ken became concerned over a growing senior housing shortage in the Las Vegas Valley. After diligent research, Ken was committed to fill the need for affordable senior housing. In 1993, the first Carefree Senior Living apartment community emerged. Ken captured the Las Vegas senior apartment market and by 2006, he had a total of nine communities throughout Las Vegas. That same year, Ken sold all nine communities. The sale of the communities became the largest multi-family transaction in Las Vegas history. Ken sold the properties but retained the Carefree Senior Living brand name.
In 2004, Carefree Senior Living was expanded west to California, located in the North Natomas area of Sacramento. Carefree has introduced a new way of life to that area and has been received well by the community. In 2007, Carefree Senior Living in the Willows village of Summerlin opened its doors. Located in one of the most desirable places to live in Las Vegas, Carefree Senior Living (at the Willows) offers extraordinary views of the Red Rock mountain range west of Las Vegas.
* Mystic Lodge Casino is a separate entity and not owned by Templeton Gaming Corporation.
Ken Templeton is the founder and owner of The Templeton Group, a diversified group of companies that is made up of Templeton Development Corporation, Carefree Senior Living, Ken Templeton Realty and Investment, Inc., Mystic Lodge Casino, and Templeton Gaming Corporation. Ken plays an active role in overseeing all of the business operations of the company. Ken Templeton is a long-time Las Vegas resident, who has been involved in the Las Vegas real estate market since 1975.
Ken began developing commercial and residential properties in 1980 and has owned several businesses including Rainbow Drug, which was sold to Longs Drug in 1997. In 1997, Ken obtained a gaming license and formed Templeton Gaming Corporation, and became the exclusive slot route operator for Longs Drugs and Food4Less throughout Nevada, and Vista Grill in Sun City, Summerlin.
In 1993, he developed his first Carefree Senior Living apartment community, which became his flagship product. From one Carefree, came another, until he had nine Carefree Senior Living communities throughout Las Vegas. His solid business model, coupled with his personal attention to detail and his affinity to connect with seniors, made Carefree communities a very desirable place to live. The Carefree communities in Las Vegas were wildly successful and in 2006, Ken sold all nine Carefree communities in Las Vegas to help some of his Carefree partners transition into retirement. The sale of the nine Carefree communities became the largest multi-family housing transaction in Las Vegas' history. Ken sold the communities but kept the Carefree Senior Living brand name. As this was an unprecedented achievement by any developer, it continued to encourage Ken to keep building and expanding the Carefree brand.
An active community leader, Ken has been involved in a myriad of different organizations. Currently, he is a Board Member of American Seniors Housing Association (ASHA), and has had the distinction of being Chairman of the Board for three distinctive Las Vegas banks since 1983. He was also formerly the President of Sun State Bank in Las Vegas.
